The #1 ranked Hawkeyes of Iowa takes out in state rival #13 Iowa St Cyclones 22-11

Ames, I.A.— In front of an estimated crowd of 9,000 fans at the Hilton Coliseum. The dual between these two teams is widely considered to be one of the most anticipated rivalries in all of college wrestling and it lived up to the hype. #18 Kysen Terukina of Iowa St got things started for the Cyclones at 125lbs with an 8-2 decision of Jesse Ybarra.

The Hawkeyes have been short handed at 125lbs due to Spencer Lee, a two time National Champion being out due to Injury. #3 ranked Austin DeSanto who is the most controversial wrestler in the Iowa program would take the mat at 133lbs against Ramazan Attasauov. It took a while for them to get going as both of them were hit with a double stall warning in 1:40 of the first period.


Attasauov would get hit with his second stall giving a point to DeSanto before the end of the first period. Attasauov elected to go under in the second period and scored an escape. DeSanto would get the takedown making the score 3-1. Attasauov would give a penalty point to DeSanto for unsportsmanlike putting the score at 4-2. Action went out of bounds and DeSanto was in hit with unsportsmanlike when he pushed Attasauov into the announcer's table. That made the score 4-3 DeSanto going into the 3rd period.

DeSanto went under in the 3rd and escaped making the score 5-3 before both wrestlers were hit with a double stalling call making the final score 6-4 DeSanto. "It was fingers, it was fingers so, by rule they have to stop it or stalemate whatever and then they warn you fingers so, the referee felt that both guys were equally at fault" Brands said about the double stall call. That match tied the team score at 3 all. At 141lbs #2 ranked Jayden Eierman of Iowa would run a takedown clinic to a major decision over #19 Zach Redding 15-7.


At 149lbs #9 Max Murin of Iowa decisioned Ian Parker 3-2. Murin gave up an escape point and a point for stalling in the match. It was a 10-3 team score going into the 157lbs where #1 ranked and defending National Champion David Carr of Iowa St would have a tough match. He inked out a 6-3 victory over Kaleb Young. Carr also locked up 2:01 of riding time in the match. It looked as Iowa was going to run away with this dual after #1 Alex Marinelli secured a 16-5 major decision over Grant Stotts making the team score 14-6.


Nelson Brands of Iowa squeezed out a 3-1 decision over Joel Devine at 174lbs putting the overall team score at 17-6 Iowa.12th ranked Marcus Colman of Iowa St cut into the Iowa lead with a 4-1 decision over Myles Wilson. The score was 17-9 when Yonger Bastida of Iowa St who is from Brazil won a 4-3 decision over Jacob Warner at 197lbs. The team score was 17-12 Iowa but at the conclusion of the match Bastida spiked his head gear in celebration of his win and a team point for unsportsmanlike was deducted. That penalty point dropped the team score to 17-11 Iowa. Kevin Dresser, who is the head coach of Iowa St said that Bastida isn't clear on the rules, he has only been over here in the states a couple months and speaks minimal English. He's still learning the rules of folkstyle. Bastida comes from a freestyle background.


#5 ranked Tony Cassiopppi of Iowa won his match by disqualification due to Sam Schuyler stalling out. The final score was 23-11 Iowa but a team point was taken from Iowa when Coach Terry Brands ran over to the the bench of Iowa St taunting them causing a brief altercation. Terry Brands said "Its the next day in competition, two teams that want to win and a stall out to end; we're up 17-11 and the guy got stalled out of the dual, the guy got stalled out, of course there's heated emotions of course" The final score was 22-11 Iowa. Brands called this dual win "a step along the path to Detroit"
